Ethos' Music Lessons Registration

Fees for group classes: $100 for ten weeks (includes book use).
Classes meet once a week for one hour and start the week of March 31st, 2008.
Due date for registration:  September 10, 2007.

Primer = Beginner (No prior experience)
Level 1 = Beginner with Experience (Less than one full year lessons / classes)
Level 2 = Intermediate (More than one full year of experience or consent of instructor).

PreSchoolers and K-2nd Grade
KIDS ROCK! - This class is a wonderful opportunity for preschoolers and kindergartners (age 2-5) to develop early music skills in a joyful environment. Kids Rock maximizes the natural learning and inquisitiveness of childhood. By starting early your child will benefit from the continuity of instruction in Ethos’ other excellent programs. Parent participation is important, so get ready to dance, sing, bond and have fun with your children! The class will use percussion instruments, Boom Whackers, stories, singing and games to cultivate your child’s musical creativity.Kids Rock!
CREATION STATION - This class is a great opportunity for young children to develop early musical and creative skills. NIcole Severson’s Creation Station releases students creativity through rhythm, sound and movement. Nicole teaches songs accompanied by her guitar while children play along with shakers and other fun rhythm instruments. Students particpate in co-creating choregraphy, making instruments and creating costumes. It is a dynamic class that Nicole has been teaching in various homes and schools throughout Portland since 2006. Creation Station:
HAND DRUMS – Students learn the basics of drumming by learning rhythms from around the world.  This is a class that lends itself perfectly to the group setting as more drummers allow for multiple parts to be played together. Students explore the connections between World Rhythm traditions and variations.Hand Drums:
KINDER KEYBOARDS – Children grades K-2nd learn to play simple songs while focusing on the basics of rhythm and note reading in a fun and supportive environment. Keyboards are provided for in-class use. (Book Purchase Required)Kinder Keyboards:
RECORDER – Younger children learn to play and read music while learning simple melodies.  A great introduction to wind instruments on a small,  affordable, easy-to-learn instrument. Recorder:
UKULELE – A perfect introduction for children not yet old enough to join guitar class. Students learn basic chords, simple melodies and how to play as a group. Ukulele:
KINDER VIOLIN – Students learn basic bow techniques to produce good tone, first hand position, simple melodies and scales and how to play as a group. Children learn first by listening and imitating, with careful guidance, and without initially reading music.Kinder Violin:

Classes for Kids 2nd-5th Grade
CELLO – Students learn the fundamentals of cello technique, basic bow techniques to produce good tone, first hand position, simple melodies and scales, and how to play as a group.Cello:
DRUM SET – Students learn popular beats and fills and are introduced to the fundamentals of counting and reading rhythms. Level 1 will introduce more beats, more complicated fills, and will focus more on reading rhythms.Drum Set:
FLUTE – Students explore the elements of tone production in the low and middle registers, are introduced to the fundamentals of reading music, and learn basic articulations, rhythms and meters. Flute:
GUITAR  – Students learn basic open-position chords, tuning, simple melodies and scales while also learning to use chord charts and basic guitar tablature.  Level 1 students expand their chord repertoire and learn more advanced melodies and strum patterns.  An emphasis is placed on quick, accurate chord changes and more challenging chords and melodies. Guitar:

PIANO – Students learn hand position, simple songs and melodies while learning to read notes, and basic rhythms. LEVEL 2 students will work on playing with both hands together, and integrating chords into their playing while tackling more advanced songs and melodies.Piano:
VIOLIN – Students learn basic bow techniques to produce good tone, first hand position, simple melodies and scales, and how to play as a group. Students learn first by listening and imitating, with careful guidance, while also learning to read notes and basic rhythms.Violin:

Classes for Kids 5th-12th Grade
WOODWINDS – Students learn the basic techniques for clarinet or saxophone including tone production, note names, fingerings, and major scales while learning to read musical notation and performing melodies and songs in a group setting.Clarinet: See Woodwinds

BEATMAKING/HIP HOP LAB - Students learn to create beats, bass lines and loops on state-of-the-art equipment and software.  Rhythmic concepts, MIDI sequencing, sampling techniques, and production methods are taught as students learn to create entire songs.  Aspiring rappers are encouraged to showcase their skills and record them on top of their creations. BeatMaking/Hip Hop Lab: Free Drop-in Lab (no registration required) Tuesdays 6-8pm, Thursdays 6:30-8:00pm
